MATTHEW'S FIRST RIDE ON FLASH

Hi Christie and Matthew,
Today was the big day for Matthew to have his first ride on Flash!

As usual, Flash stood calmly while Matthew mounted, and walked around the
arena. Flash is such an obliging character. They had a short ride in the
arena, and Flash stopped several times and was less willing to walk on for
Matthew than he has been with Christie and I.

Flash does not appear in any way sore or tired and approached his work with
his usual gusto. He did seem a little more cautious with Matthew on him
though.

After watching his ride and talking with Matthew about this, I feel that
maybe Matthew was so intent on doing the right thing by his favourite boy
that he was slightly tense and inhibited Flash' movement a little. Flash
didn't seem confused or worried, he just seemed to feel that Matthew was
telling him to stop with his position and seat.

We've discussed Matthew's ride on Flash and are planning on working on
Matthew's riding position (on my horses) and having Matthew stay more
relaxed, so that Flash can go forward more easily the next time Matthew
rides him.

Next: we fit Flash' NEW saddle, and Flash goes for a longer ride... It won't
be long until I ask him for his first canter under saddle too!
